Odin

Odin is the main God of the Scandinavian mythology. You've probably heard a lot about him... Indeed, he's one of the most popular in the business. He is often referred to as a God with great wisdom and unlimited knowledge... Indeed... the guy knows everything about everything. But in order to attain the ultimate knowledge, he had to take out an eye and even skewer himself on his spear. Yep, he's pretty damn motivated. And I'll tell you all about it in a few lines. But first, I'll introduce you to Odin(even if you probably already know him).

Odin's characteristics

First of all, you must know that he is a Polymorphic God. That is to say thathe can take many possible forms. Like, he can be a sexy blonde... and the next second a 300 kilo Viking with a long beard. A lot of fun with the guys! As for his family, Odin's parents are Bur(also named Bor or Mannus), the God of ancient times and Bestla, a giantess. Otherwise he has two brothers Vili and Ve, all 3 are the first Gods of Aesir(living in Asgard)

And the hobby of these 3 brothers? Creating worlds(yes, just that), I'll tell you about it in a few minutes. Besides, Odin is considered as the God of the dead, of victory, of knowledge. We'll say that these are his main functions. Otherwise he is also said to be the God of magic, poetry, prophecies, war and also hunting (yep, he has many passions and talents Odin... and that's normal, he's just the boss, you'll see).

Odin lives in the palace of Valaskjálf (I abandoned the pronunciation) which is in Asgard. And let me tell you, the palace is not bad. You see a 5 star hotel with service included and a royal suite? It's a dog house next to this beautiful palace. In this palace, there is also his throne named Hlidskjalf (yes, Odin loves to give names to his objects, you will see), made by dwarves.

The creation of the world by Odin

If Odin was so popular among the Vikings, it's because he is nothing less than the creator of worlds and men (in Scandinavian mythology, there are 9 worlds, although the number can change depending on the source). And this is how he created the world. A long time ago, Odin and his brothers were fighting the people of the giants. The war was long and no one had the advantage.

On the one hand Odin and his two brothers were powerful warriors... and they healed quickly from their wounds. On the other hand, the giants suffered heavy losses in every battle... but the buggers reproduced quickly! Anyway, one day Odin finally killed Ymir, the original giant, and that marked the end of this war. And it is also at this moment that he decides to create, with the help of his brothers, the Universe.

But Odin and his two brothers had nothing at hand to create such a thing as the Universe... They only had Ymir's corpse lying on the ground... so yes, Odin used this corpse to create the Universe ! The blood that flowed from the giant Ymir's corpse had already created the oceans. And it was with his flesh that Odin and his brothers created Midgard located between Jotunheim and Ásgard. Midgard will later be men... and it's the perfect transition to tell you about :

Odin's creation of Men

One day, Odin and his two brothers were walking on the beach when they saw two trees on the ground... An elm and an ash tree. And this is where it gets a bit mystical and spiritual. Odin gave the elongated trees: the spark of life. Vili, his brother, gave them a spirit. And Ve gave them the 5 senses. Once this ritual(which should be a bit weird to watch) was over... the trees didn't look like vegetation anymore. But two little mini-gods.

And since they are not dumb... well there was a woman and a man named Embla and Ask respectively. On top of that, Odin gave them a nice gift: Midgard.

Odin the boss

Odin is a man with a thirst for knowledge. And he is ready to make many sacrifices to obtain what Scandinavian mythology calls: the most perfect mystical wisdom. To obtain this wisdom, Odin must drink the water from the spring... The problem? This spring is guarded by the head of the giant Mimir(and he's not a tender guy, believe me). So Mimir proposes this deal to Odin. "I'll let you drink if you sacrifice one of your eyes".

Odin, rather motivated, plucks out his left eye and throws it into the spring. He then drinks the water... and gains access to the immense knowledge of the world. But there's a small problem... Odin is not satisfied. He knew from his newly acquired knowledge thathe had not yet achieved perfect wisdom! So Odin went to the seer Volvä... and she told him that in order to attain the perfect wisdom of the world, Odin had to sacrifice himself spiritually. So Odin impaled himself on his spear named Gungnir(yes, I told you he loves to give little names to all his objects). And finally he gets the perfect knowledge of the Universe... which allows him to resurrect himself using the runes he had obtained!

The end of Odin

The legend tells that during the Ragnarök (the apocalypse)... the wolf Fenrir will free himself from his chains and will kill Odin... bringing with him chaos and destruction on the 9 worlds. And yep, all is not always rosy in Viking mythology... and that's why we love it too !
