Odin

Odin is the chief God of Scandinavian mythology. You have surely heard many things about him… Indeed, he is one of the most popular in the field. He is often spoken of as a God with great wisdom and unlimited knowledge… Indeed… the guy knows everything about everything. But to reach ultimate knowledge, he had to give up an eye and even impale himself on his spear. Yep, he is seriously motivated. And I reveal everything to you in a few lines. But first, let me introduce Odin (even if you probably already know the guy).

The characteristics of Odin

First of all, you should know that he is a Polymorphic God. That means he can take many possible forms. Like, he can be a sexy blonde… and the next second a 300-kilo Viking with a long beard. Enough to have a good laugh with friends! Regarding his family, Odin’s parents are Bur (also called Bor or Mannus), the God of ancient times, and Bestla, a giantess. Otherwise, he has two brothers Vili and Ve, all three are the first Aesir Gods (living in Asgard).

And the pastime of these 3 brothers? Creating worlds (yes, that’s right), I’ll tell you about it in a few minutes. Moreover, Odin is considered the God of the dead, of victory, of knowledge. Let’s say these are his main functions. Otherwise, he is also said to be the God of magic, poetry, prophecies, war, and also hunting (yep, Odin has many passions and talents… and it’s normal, he’s just the boss, you’ll see).

Odin lives in the palace of Valaskjálf (I gave up on the pronunciation) which is located in Asgard. And let me tell you, the palace is not shabby. You know a 5-star hotel with full service and a royal suite? It’s a doghouse compared to this magnificent palace. In this palace, there is also his throne named Hlidskjalf (yes, Odin loves giving names to his objects, you’ll see), made by dwarves.

The creation of the world by Odin

If Odin was so popular among the Vikings, it’s because he is none other than the creator of worlds and Men (in Scandinavian mythology, there are 9 worlds, although the number may vary depending on sources). And here is how he created the world. Long ago, Odin and his brothers were fighting the giant people. The war was long and no one was gaining the upper hand.

On one side, Odin and his two brothers were powerful warriors… and they healed quickly from their wounds. On the other side, the giants suffered heavy losses in each battle… but those guys reproduced quickly! Anyway, one fine day Odin finally killed Ymir, the original giant, and that marked the end of this war. And it is also at this moment that he decided to create, with the help of his brothers, the Universe.

But Odin and his two brothers had nothing on hand to create such a thing as the Universe… They only had the corpse of Ymir lying on the ground… so yes, Odin used this corpse to create the Universe! The blood flowing from the giant Ymir’s corpse had already created the oceans. And it was with his flesh that Odin and his brothers created Midgard located between Jotunheim and Ásgard. Midgard would later be the home of men… and that’s the perfect transition to talk to you about:

The creation of Men by Odin

One fine day, Odin and his two brothers were walking on the beach when they spotted two trees on the ground… An elm and an ash. And this is where it gets a bit mystical and spiritual. Odin gave the lying trees: the spark of life. Vili, his brother, forged them a spirit. And Ve gave them the 5 senses. Once this ritual (which must have been a bit weird to see) was finished… the trees no longer looked like vegetation. But like two little mini-Gods.

And since they are not stupid… well, there was a woman and a man named respectively Embla and Ask. Moreover, Odin gave them a nice gift: Midgard.

Odin the boss

Odin is a man eager for knowledge. And he is ready to make many sacrifices to achieve what Scandinavian mythology calls: the most perfect mystical wisdom. To obtain this wisdom, Odin must drink the water from the source… The problem? This source is guarded by the head of the giant Mimir (and he is not a soft guy, believe me). So Mimir offers this deal to Odin. “I’ll let you drink if you sacrifice one of your eyes.”

Odin, pretty motivated, rips out his left eye and throws it into the source. He then drinks the water… and gains immense knowledge of the world. But there is a small problem… Odin is not satisfied. He knew, thanks to his newly acquired knowledge, that he had not yet reached perfect wisdom! Odin then went to the seeress Volvä… and she confessed to him that to access the perfect wisdom of the world, Odin had to sacrifice himself spiritually. Odin then impaled himself on his spear named Gungnir (yes, I told you he loves giving little names to all his objects). And finally, he accesses the perfect knowledge of the Universe… which allows him to resurrect himself using the runes he had obtained!

The end of Odin

Legend has it that during Ragnarök (the apocalypse)... the wolf Fenrir will break free from his chains and kill Odin… bringing with him chaos and destruction across the 9 worlds. And yep, not everything is rosy in Viking mythology… and that’s also why we love it!

Now, I would like to quickly present to you 3 jewelry models that honor the almighty Odin.
