Valknut

I'm not going to lie to you... the meaning of the Valknut symbol is very complex. Like really, everyone says different things about it... some even call it the cloak-and-dagger node. Bref, the only thing we can be certain of ? It's that the symbol is mega-stylized and is often taken as an example for tattoos.

What's impressive about this symbol...is that we know that it's super important to the Vikings, because it is found on a variety of objects in Scandinavian countries before the Christian era (in the year 1000)... But we don't know exactly what it means. This is another one of the Vikings' hidden mysteries...perso ? I love secrets like this!!

But rest assured... yes you behind your screen with your Viking mind, I'm still going to reveal the few leads that come up most often to explain what the Valknut symbol was doing on so many objects! So here we go:

The 9 worlds and the Valknut

As you can see, the Valknut symbol is made up of 3 interlocking triangles. And as you know if you've been to 5th grade at least... well, a triangle has 3 sides! So since there are 3 triangles in the symbol... well there are 3 times 3 = 9 sides. And conveniently, that's the number of worlds that exist in Norse mythology (well between us it may very well be a coincidence... but that's between us eh). And only one being in the universe of Norse mythology can pass from one world to another without too much effort... Odin the patron of the Gods. And so some say that this crow-worshipping cyclops would have this power thanks to Valknut.

Valknut, the symbol of warriors

A very serious hypothesis... because Valknut is often next to Odin... and Odin loves fighting and warriors. He loves it so much that legend has it that Vikings who died in battle were taken away by the Valkyries (women who decide who dies and who doesn't on the battlefieldat Valhalla.  A place where warriors could booze, and eat at will waiting for Ragnarök to fight by Odin's side one last time (and yes, because Odin will die during Ragnarök killed by the rabid wolf Fenrir).

So in short, the Valknut symbol could be a sign of courage, bravery and will on the battlefield. And as you know... Vikings liked to fight, so it's no wonder that Valknut is everywhere. We'll have to see if the future gives us the answer... or not.

The Three Horns and the Valknut

The Valknut could also be created by the God Odin himself (and yes sir)! The Valknut would represent the past, Urd, the present, Verdandi and the future, Skuld which are also the names of the three Norns. If you don't know who the Norns are... well they're the women who control the destinies of men and Gods (yep, just that).  They also control the powerful power of runes.

A power that Odin later acquired by spiritually sacrificing himself... well basically he impaled himself with his spear at the tree of Yggdrasil.  So there you have it, according to this version each side of the triangle would represent a Norse and a temporal state.

The cult of the dead and Valknut

Archaeologists and historians also believe that the symbol of Valknut would be a kind of cult for the dead.  And that's pretty logical reasoning, as the Valknut symbol is often found on tombs and Viking rune stones.  So the Valknut would be a kind of lucky symbol to accompany the dead to the afterlife.

In any case, it is a sacred symbol and full of meaning. You don't put this symbol on a toilet paper wrapper for example... No, for the Vikings it is a reference to their culture and their deepest beliefs.  And believe it or not... there are still other hypotheses about the Valknut. What's amazing is that it's one of the most popular symbols in Norse mythology... but no one knows exactly what it means.

And that's rather normal, as the Vikings were a people who passed on their knowledge orally... so there is very little written material for historians to draw on.  Now that you know a bit... I'd like to introduce you to 3 Viking jewellery designs that feature the Valknut symbol.
